AboutThe NBA is made up of two conferences: the Eastern Conference and the Western Conference. These conferences are made up of fifteen teams each and only the top eight teams from each conference make it to the playoffs. Often times, one conference is better than the other by a quite obvious margin. This means that better teams that are in the tougher conference would miss the playoffs because so many of their teams did well, but the lesser teams in the opposing conference would make the playoffs because not as many teams did well in their conference.
This issue does not only affect NBA fans and people associated with the organization. Teams receive bonus money if they reach the playoffs, and get more money for the further that they make it in the playoffs. Often times, players use that bonus money to give back to their communities and to charities. Therefore, the help that certain communities and charities receive depends on the teams that make the playoffs. The debate to alter the NBA playoff system is a very relevant argument to a multitude of people. |
The Wade's World Foundation, started by Dwyane Wade of the Miami Heat, is one example of how the amount of money an NBA player earns can affect many other peoples' lives.
